Rust's in-game Official tab against everything elseOfficial servers are the ones in Rust's in-game Official tab: Facepunch's own and its partners', such as RustSpain. Rust Player Stats keeps that list by hand, by hostname and address. Everything else is a community or modded server.
The board reads 91,078 players on 11,806 public Rust servers right now, with 892 in queue. That count is live, pulled every five minutes. The last day's peak was 98,991, and the all-time record stands at 145,095. You are watching the population move in real time, and the split below shows where they are: modded or vanilla, game mode, group size, gather rate, region, and how fresh the wipe is. The European evening is the busiest hour, and the queue builds when a server hits its cap.

Prime timeWhen Rust is busiest
average over the last week · UTCQuestions
01How many people are playing Rust right now?
The number at the top of this page is every player on a public Rust server, refreshed every five minutes. It swings hard through the day: the busiest hour usually carries more than twice the players of the quietest. That figure is live, so you are seeing the count as it stands.
02Why is this lower than the count on Steam?
Steam counts everyone with Rust open, including menus, loading screens and servers that do not list publicly. This page counts players on public servers only, which is what lets it split them by server type. The gap is the people not yet in a server.
03When is Rust busiest?
The European evening is the peak, and the chart of players by hour of day shows the busiest hour in UTC, averaged over the last week. Evening in Australia lands in the UK's late morning, and the US east coast evening is after midnight in the UK. The queue builds when a server hits its cap, so watch the count climb before you join.
04Are more people on modded or vanilla servers?
Modded servers hold more players in total, mostly because there are far more of them. The split above is live and shifts as servers report. You can see which side is pulling the crowd right now.
